How to check drawer slide clearance

Subtract the drawer box’s outside width from the opening width to find the total space across both sides. That difference does not tell you how much space is available on either individual side.

Check your two widths

Use the same mounting location for both measurements. You can enter inches or millimeters and leave a value blank if you cannot check it yet. The result records space; it does not approve a slide.

Why dividing by two can mislead

Unequal left and right gaps together equal B minus A. — Total side space = opening width B − outside box width A. Dividing the total by two gives only a centered estimate. The illustrated drawer is off-center to show why each side needs checking.

A correct total can hide a tight side and a loose side. Check the actual left and right spaces at the intended slide position, then compare them with the selected product’s side-space requirements and tolerances.

Also look along the depth. An opening can be wide enough at the front while a bowed side, an out-of-square box or an obstruction narrows the mounting path farther back.

Measure the mounting space, not the drawer front

Find the mounting faces. Use the surfaces where the slides will actually be supported. In a face-frame cabinet, the front opening and the space farther inside may differ.
Measure the outside of the box. Exclude the decorative front and handles. Keep the tape square across the box.
Measure the corresponding opening. Check front and rear areas if the space or support changes. Note any bracket, spacer or protrusion affecting the path.
Compare with the exact product. Check the complete assembly’s side-space requirement, tolerances and mounting arrangement. Rail thickness alone is not a full fitting specification.

If the box appears wider than the opening, recheck the points and units. A negative difference is a measurement or geometry problem to resolve, not usable clearance.

Replacing side-mounted slides

Choose a candidate that meets the actual space and attachment requirements. Use the side-mount installation guide for the fitting sequence after selection.

Changing roller slides
