Side-mount vs undermount drawer slides

Choose around the drawer you have and the improvement you want. Concealed runners hide the hardware; side-mounted slides may let you keep an existing box with less alteration. Neither name alone promises better motion or a compatible fit.

Compare what changes in practice

Appearance: Side rails show beside an open drawer. Concealed runners keep the sides visually clear, although attachments may be visible from underneath.
The drawer box: Side slides need suitable side space and mounting surfaces. Concealed systems can also specify the box width, side thickness, bottom position and preparation at the rear. A box built for one arrangement is not automatically ready for the other.
Access and closing: Check the actual product for extension and closing or opening functions. A concealed location does not by itself mean full extension or soft-close. Suitable side-slide products may already provide the function you want.
Fitting work: A documented like-for-like replacement may retain the existing construction. Switching arrangements requires checking the complete drawer and cabinet, not just finding a runner of the same nominal length.
Load suitability: Compare the exact candidate’s rated application, length and installation conditions. Mounting position is not a reliable ranking of strength.

Keep the current arrangement when it meets the goal

If you want to repair a loose mount or replace failed hardware, first check a matching solution for the construction already there. If the goal is quieter closing or better access, compare suitable options within that type before assuming a conversion is necessary.

Keeping side slides does not mean keeping their present features. Changing to concealed runners does not guarantee that the existing drawer can stay unmodified. Write down the function you want to gain and any function you need to retain.

Check the available space around the drawer and the selected system’s drawer-sizing and preparation requirements. Expect to verify width, depth, underside geometry, attachments and cabinet support. Some projects require modifying or rebuilding the box.
